Forward Observer Practice Test

There are five primary methods used to locate a target. Each method offers a different way to pin down the target’s position based on what reference points and instruments are available.

Grid coordinates read directly from the map’s grid. This gives an exact location on the map by using a known reference system, which is especially useful when you have a precise map and want an exact point.

Polar coordinates rely on a known reference from the observer’s position: you measure an azimuth to the target and a range to it, then convert that into a map position. This is handy when you can measure direction and distance from your own location.

From a known point uses a reference point whose position you already know. By taking a bearing and distance from that known point to the target, you determine where the target lies relative to that point. It’s effective when nearby fixed points are accessible and well-mapped.

Intersection involves bearings or lines of sight from two or more known points toward the target. The point where those lines meet is the target’s location, which is especially accurate when multiple reference points are available.

Resection determines your own position by sighting on two or more known points; once your location is established, you can compute the target’s position from that frame of reference. This method is useful when the observer needs to establish their own coordinates before locating the target.

Because these five approaches cover the main ways to determine a target’s position, five is the correct total.
